The main task of water pump is to maintain the circulation of fluid of the cooling system. The pump is driven by a belt connected to the engine.

Basically, it works by pulley and belt and rarely by sprocket and chain which are connected to the engine. In many cases, water pump is a part of the timing belt drive of the vehicle which requires its mandatory replacement along with timing belt and pulleys, as it suffers the same wear as the other transmission components of the system and not replacing pump can cause serious engine damage. The same rule applies when the pump is driven by multi-V belt or generator belt - when the pulleys related to this belt are replaced, the pump needs to be replaced too.

Water pumps are relatively simple devices. They pump the coolant through the engine block to the radiator which task is to take the heat that the engine releases. In most cases, the pump is driven by the crankshaft. The coolant is driven by the centrifugal force, which is generated from the movement of the water pump propeller. The coolant is drawn from the radiator to the water pump through the bottom hose of the radiator. The coolant then circulates through the engine, takes the generated heat and then returns to the radiator where the heat is released into the air.
 
Water pumps are two types: mechanical and electrical. The most common type is mechanical.
Electric pumps are rare. The difference between these two types is that the electric pumps are not driven by the engine (belt), but by electricity. Since the electric pump is not directly dependent of the engine, this allows the vehicle manufacturers to have more precise tuning of the cooling systems, according to its current needs (for example, cooling pump is running, even when the engine is turned off).
 
 
 
Analyses revealed that the most common cause for damage of the water pump is coolant contamination, excessive vibration and uneven loading. Contaminated coolant may contain abrasive particles that cause failure of the seal of the pump axis.
